Migration to Fabric as a path to more efficient reporting in the dental technology industry

Project description

The goal of the project was to optimize financial and sales reporting in Power BI, which had been struggling with slow loading times and partial malfunctions. The customer required the existing reports to run stably and quickly, serving as a reliable basis for decision-making.

The scope also included the development of new reports designed to effectively connect financial and sales data. The aim was to deliver a solution that would not only cover current needs but also enable future growth and an expansion of the customer’s reporting capabilities.

additional costs for the DWH in Fabric

We started the project by stabilizing the existing financial and sales reports, which were slow and partially malfunctioning. Together with the client, we set clear steps and workload estimates to quickly resolve the most pressing issues. After this initial phase, we transitioned to agile project management. This allowed us to respond flexibly to new requirements and dedicate time to a detailed analysis of business logic and data sources before developing the technical solution.

A key milestone of the project was the migration to Microsoft Fabric, where we built a new data warehouse. We chose this path based on an audit of the existing DWH solution, as modifying or optimizing it would have been more complex than creating a new one from scratch. The entire development was carried out on MS Fabric trial capacity, which meant no additional costs. We also leveraged our own serverless framework to simplify the process.

The migration further enabled a switch from Power BI Premium Per User licenses to more cost-effective Pro licenses, bringing additional savings to the client. The solution integrated not only the ERP system and manual data from SharePoint, but also new external sources, such as exchange rates from the Swedish National Bank via API. This significantly reduced the client’s manual data processing workload.

One of the main challenges was to keep the original reporting running during the development of the new solution, while also optimizing the handling of manual data in SharePoint. Throughout the project, we repeatedly refined the calculation logic, which complicated the final validation, but ultimately resulted in more accurate and reliable outputs.

The outcome is a robust data solution built on a single semantic model. Today, it serves as a unified source for 18 reports across finance, sales, pricing, controlling, and top management, providing the client with a stable foundation for further reporting development.
